Let's have a look at what's happening, 21st century.

    • Gender Identity - creating inclusive school climates (gender identity, gender expression and preventing gender stereotyping).

Friday was Earth Day at TDSB and while we would usually do a schoolyard / community clean up, the swampy conditions of the field meant that we have postponed to a later date. I had our crew outside for most of the afternoon to simply enjoy our first real day of warmish weather. It's been a long winter and it felt good to be outside and playing together.

Here are 3 group shots. Slightly different in each way - you choose which one you like best.
Is it me or have they all grown up so much!!

Homework

  • Homework and Agendas will go home tomorrow (Tuesday). Scientist in the School was working with all the Grade 4s from 3 different classrooms in Room 206 and our Grade 3s were working out of the classroom for the afternoon.  We never had a chance to get things updated and sent home. Thank for your patience.

See you all tomorrow.

March 18 - 22

Welcome back!

I hope you managed to find time to spend with family and friends and that you made good memories.

To our Muslim friends, my thoughts and prayers have been with you and will continue to be for many days ahead.

As I prepped for the coming days, I came across this written selection by the wonderful writer and author Jacqueline Woodson, and so I am sharing.

Kindness Is a Choice
by Jacqueline Woodson
(a portion of her letter to her children, Toshi and Jackson Leroi)

From We Rise, We Resist, We Raise Our Voices, Edited by Wade Hudson and Cheryl Willis Hudson (2018, Just Us Books, Inc.)

... kindness is a choice. We can walk through the world choosing to think of others. Or we could not. Each morning when you walk out our door, I want you to ask yourselves - What choice am I going to make today? I want that choice to be Kindness. Because right now, all around you, the world is feeling unkind. As a child, I was taught that I am in the world but not of the world. This is what I want you to think when the world feels like it has lost its mind, when leaders don't feel like leaders, when adults lie and bully, when you know in your brilliant and beautiful and loving hearts, the right thing to do and the right way to be ... Walk through each day and out of it, know that the blanket of love each of you is wrapped in and be ready to open that blanket to others.

March 4 - 8

Hi Everyone!

Lots and lots on the go!

African Heritage Month

During our African Heritage Month, our students worked on a variety of activities. We read a Bantu Tale, The Name of the Tree and a Tanzanian story In a Cloud of Dust. We used tangrams to create animals that are native to Africa and who appeared as characters in The Name of the Tree. We made bicycles out of loose parts for children in Tanzania who must walk hours to school every day due to the lack of transportation, even bicycles. We reflected, made connections and discussed author's intent. Evelyn drew (freehand!) a map of the continent of Africa and we are finding and adding flags for each country in Africa. Our grade 4's are researching and creating Google slide presentations about Canadian Heroes of African Heritage and these will form the outlines for their report writing in March.  Great learning by all!
